I should preface this by saying that I do not have kids and am, in no way, shape or form, criticizing anyone's parenting. Parenting looks tough and sometime survival mode is all you've got.
My best thing today was watching my (now) 6 year old nephew and 27 of his closest friends act like kids for 2 hours straight! I hear so many stories from students, coworkers and friends about their constant running around with the kids, entertaining them, struggling to get them away from the TV or video games, etc, but today at a rec center a whole bunch of kids just ran around, played basketball, soccer, hockey, scooters and such without anyone needing to organize anything for them. Some parents seemed amazed and seemed on edge that their kids would "need" them. The kids paid no attention to the adults, were so behaved and had a blast. Then they ate a crap load of sugar and were sent on their way! This is also the very same, sweet nephew who, when his parents told him that his invitation said "no presents please" replied with, "Of course not, playing with my friends is the fun!" I think there might still be hope for the future.

27 kids?! Sounds like quite the party. I love just watching kids have and make their own fun at this age. It is just pure joy. And what a great response to no presents!

This sounds like a good old-fashioned birthday party, where kids just played and had a great time, and ate a truckload of sugar (it's only one day, for Pete's sake!). I love your nephew feeling ok about no presents. Someone is doing a really good job parenting him!

I don't have kids either and can't imagine coming home to kids, or supervising a large, loud group of them on the weekend.

I love it when kids just are kids. So fun to watch.

Letting kids be kids...as hard and scary as it is for a parent, and believe this mom that it IS scary, is TOTALLY NECESSARY for them to grow and become actual independent humans. We can't limit their experiences and still expect them to grow.
