My best thing today? Working with the 1st graders. I used to teach in primary; 18 years actually before I moved to intermediate. Now I spend my days with 3-6 and I really, really miss the little kids. While it was fun to be there today, what lead up to it was not so great.
I accidentally set my alarm for 4:00 instead of 5. I actually slept until the alarm, which is rare and did not even look at the clock as I got up and showered. Around 4:30 I walked back into the bedroom and noticed my mistake. UGH!!! I laid back down for awhile but it just wasn't the same. As someone who is not a very good sleeper, I really relish the sleep that I do get. A few minutes before classes began I got a "surprise" visit from the school secretary. This is never good. We were short a sub. Our instructional coach and I split the day, but that meant spending my planning time preparing materials for my math students to work on in their homerooms while I was off teaching 1st grade. Basically the day was non stop and my list of things to do just keeps getting longer. It doesn't help that I have 27 conferences scheduled for Thurs/Friday. Those parents of gifted kids just love to hear how their angels are doing! Tomorrow is a new day...

I should preface this by saying that I do not have kids and am, in no way, shape or form, criticizing anyone's parenting. Parenting looks tough and sometime survival mode is all you've got.
My best thing today was watching my (now) 6 year old nephew and 27 of his closest friends act like kids for 2 hours straight! I hear so many stories from students, coworkers and friends about their constant running around with the kids, entertaining them, struggling to get them away from the TV or video games, etc, but today at a rec center a whole bunch of kids just ran around, played basketball, soccer, hockey, scooters and such without anyone needing to organize anything for them. Some parents seemed amazed and seemed on edge that their kids would "need" them. The kids paid no attention to the adults, were so behaved and had a blast. Then they ate a crap load of sugar and were sent on their way! This is also the very same, sweet nephew who, when his parents told him that his invitation said "no presents please" replied with, "Of course not, playing with my friends is the fun!" I think there might still be hope for the future. I got to spend this morning basking in the sunshine while running a bunch of errands that I have put off. I love these kinds of days. I can get things done, enjoy the weather without time constraints. Today, in the car during my stops, I was replying and adding on to the WAY TOO MANY texts happening with my girlfriends. My friends of 30+ years. I am lucky enough to have had the same core group of friends FOREVER. My sister and I are twins and we befriended 2 sisters in the neighborhood when we were 5. We have been friends for 40 years! Then we added more to the group in high school and nothing has changed since then. EXCEPT that we have gotten older. When did this happen? I use to think 45 was SOOOOO old, and now, here we are, 45 and still acting like we are 16. The immaturity of our texts sometimes is hilarious. The rest of these girls are responsible for small people, one is a lawyer and yet we can spend hours cracking ourselves up over such immature things. I love those girls. So... today, they are my best thing.
